Where the cost actually comes from
Every injection molding project has two completely different costs:
- The mold (one-time): this is the big number in any low-volume project. A mold is precision-machined steel, and it costs the same whether you make 500 parts or 50,000.
- The part (per-unit): material, machine time, labor, packaging. This is small — often a fraction of the molded part's selling price.
The math is simple. If a mold costs $10,000:

- Setup and changeover: a big press changing molds costs time and labor, so they want long uninterrupted runs
- Mold amortization: they have quoted the mold assuming high volume, so a small order blows up the per-part math
- Sales focus: large factories chase large orders; small ones are "not worth their time"
None of that means you cannot do low volume. It means you need the right partner.
How to keep low-volume molding affordable
- Work with a low-MOQ manufacturer — smaller, focused shops run short batches every day and do not punish you for it
- Start with a simpler mold — single-cavity first to validate, then invest in multi-cavity once demand is proven
- Use standard materials — specialty resins carry premiums and minimums; standard engineering plastics do not
- Prototype before tooling — validate on CNC-machined prototypes so you do not pay for mold revisions
When low-volume is the right call
- Validating a design — get real molded parts into real hands before committing to tooling scale-up
- Testing a new market — prove demand with a few hundred units instead of betting on thousands
- Custom or niche parts — some products simply never need high volume, and that is fine
